Rezum Q&A

What is Rezūm?

Rezūm is a non-surgical procedure at the Urology Center of Orange County to treat an enlarged prostate, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Dr. Fareed may recommend Rezūm when you need relief from BPH symptoms, drugs aren’t working or they cause side effects, and you don’t want surgery.

What symptoms indicate I may need Rezūm?

Your prostate naturally keeps growing during your adult years. By the time you’re 50-60 years old, it can be large enough to cause problems. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine. As the gland gradually enlarges, it pushes against the urethra and restricts the flow of urine.

You may be a good candidate for Rezūm if you have uncomfortable symptoms such as:

  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • Needing to urinate at night
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Weak urine stream
  • Urine stream that stops and starts
  • Dribbling after urinating
  • Inability to completely empty your bladder

In some cases, you may have mild symptoms and then suddenly find that you can’t urinate because of a completely blocked urethra.

How does Rezūm treat an enlarged prostate?

You won’t need general anesthesia because Rezūm is a minimally invasive procedure. However, Dr. Fareed typically gives you oral sedation and a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort.

During the procedure, Dr. Fareed guides the Rezūm device through your urethra, advancing it to the area where the urethra surrounds your prostate gland. Once the device is in place, Dr. Fareed sends a nine-second burst of water vapor (steam) into the prostate. The number of water vapor treatments you might need depends on the size of your prostate.

The steam’s natural energy kills the targeted cells in your prostate. Then your body clears away the dead cells, which reduces the size of the prostate gland, relieves pressure on the urethra, and restores the normal flow of urine.

When do I see results after the Rezūm procedure?

Dr. Fareed may insert a catheter to drain urine while the tissues heal. However, you should be able to return to your usual activities in a few days.

It takes a little time for your body to clear the treated tissues, and each person’s metabolism varies. However, most men get symptom relief in two weeks and maximum results within three months.
